2012 United Association International Apprentice Competition Ann Arbor Michigan
Aug 25, 2012

UA Canada is proud to announce that we have once again produced a champion from the 2012 UA International Apprenticeship Competition that was recently held in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Ben Wagner of Local 527 in Kitchener/Waterloo Ontario was the winner of the Plumber event which tests both theoretical knowledge and practical skills of the competitors to see who is qualified to win the overall title and we are very happy to congratulate him on being a winner.

Ben Wagner is shown here with the Training Director from Local 527 Ray Lemieux and Director of Training for UA Canada Larry Slaney. Ben is a 5th year Apprentice who works for Modern Niagara. This is the first time a Canadian Plumber Apprentice has won the International title, and the only winner prior to this was in 2011, when Sprinklerfitter Dave DeRaadt from Local 853 in Markham Ontario won the very first ever international title for Canada.

The International Apprenticeship Competition event includes 5 Apprentices from each district with the trades of Steamfitter, Plumber, Welder, Sprinklerfitter and HVACR Technician represented, for a total of 30 competitors overall, who are the result of both local union, provincial and state, and district competition events held across North America prior to this event to qualify individuals for participation. The Apprentices that are part of this process are highly skilled, motivated, and eager to compete against their brothers and sisters for a championship ring and the recognition of being the best at what they do in the entire UA organization. These Apprentices are our future leaders and we are proud of every one of them in the way they represent Canada in these events, showing their professionalism and skill, and congratulate them on being the best.

Below are the five Apprentices shown with John Telford, UA Director of Canadian Affairs. From left to right they are:
