UA Apprentice Dave DeRaadt wins Apprentice Competition
Oct 6, 2011

The United Association International Apprenticeship Competition is held every year in August in Ann Arbor Michigan as an annual event to showcase the skills of the pipe trades Apprentices of the United Association in the United States and Canada. Leading up to this event is a set of 6 regional competition events held at local unions across both countries to select the best people from each area to compete. This then is followed by the International event that is hosted at the Instructor Training Program at Washtenaw College at Eastern Michigan University.

For the first time since these competitions have been held, a Canadian Sprinkler Apprentice from Local 853 in Markham Ontario won the title of international champion. Congratulations go to Dave DeRaadt of Local 853 who is a fourth year apprentice and is employed by CNH Fire Suppressions Systems Incorporated in Kitchener Ontario, owned by Mike Heller. He completed two of the three terms of his required training prior to the competition event and has proved that he is a winner in every sense of the word. Dave represents our true definition of an Apprentice, with a thorough knowledge of his trade, a professional approach to everyone he deals with, leadership skills at the early age of 23 and finally he has now proven that he has what it takes to be considered the best at what he does in our organization in all of North America. He is a true champion in every sense of the word.

Our thanks go to Greg Mitchell, Business Manager for Local 853 and Ted Ryan Training Director for 853 and Canadian National Coordinator for Sprinklers. Their leadership is shown in their proven ability to build a training system for the next generation of United Association Sprinkler members, to the level of skill our contractors require. Congratulations again to Dave DeRaadt. We are proud of his accomplishments in setting a standard for everyone else to follow.
